NEW YORK -- John Ryan Murphy spent a while in the minors catching Dellin Betances, hoping they could someday contribute on a higher level. Mathew Barzal Jersey . On Saturday, they teamed up in a major way. Murphy hit his first big league homer and drove in three runs, Betances earned his first win in the majors and the New York Yankees bounced back to beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-3 Saturday. "I dont think it can get any better," Murphy said. David Robertson posted his first save since coming off the disabled list. Mike Trout singled with one out and stole second, setting up a nervy ninth inning. Albert Pujols followed with a foul pop, and first baseman Mark Teixeira drifted near the stands. But when he reached into the seats trying to catch it, two Yankees fans reached up and deflected it away. "I understand it. People want baseballs," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "Its not what you want to see at your home ballpark." But Robertson regrouped to retire Pujols on a routine fly and struck out Howie Kendrick to end it. A day after the Angels homered four times in a 13-1 romp, they started strong when Trout hit a solo shot on the seventh pitch of the afternoon. Murphy lined a two-out, two-run single in the second that gave the Yankees a 3-1 lead. The backup catcher homered on the first pitch in the fifth, tagging Hector Santiago (0-4) for a 4-3 lead. "We had reports on him," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "He did a good job on a changeup with guys on second and third early. It was up and he just stayed with it to right field. And he got a first-pitch fastball over the middle of the plate and he hit it out of the park. So, those are two mistakes." Murphy made his big league debut last season and began the day 6 for 36 with one RBI in his career. He played two weeks shy of his 23rd birthday while All-Star Brian McCann got a day off. "The more time youre out there, the easier it becomes," Murphy said. Last year, Murphy enjoyed a special moment, catching the final pitches of Mariano Riveras career. Called up this month when Francisco Cervelli was hurt, Murphy made his own memory on this day. "Hell never forget it," Girardi said. Especially because the fan in left field who wound up with Murphys home-run ball gave it back to him. Murphy said the souvenir was going to his mom. "Im so happy for him," Betances said. Betances said he hadnt yet tracked down any mementoes from the game. No problem, the 26-year-old righty left with something more memorable. "It was good to get the first win," he said. Betances (1-0) took over in the fifth for shaky starter Vidal Nuno and pitched two scoreless innings. The 6-foot-8 reliever struck out three, and has fanned 19 in 11 2-3 innings this season. "Happy for the kid, hes been through a lot," Girardi said. "Hes had to change roles, he had to fight to get here." Said Murphy: "When hes in the strike zone, hes unhittable." Reliever Shawn Kelley got Pujols in a key spot in the seventh and Matt Thornton got pinch-hitter Raul Ibanez on a lineout with two runners on to finish the eighth. Robertson got his third save. He was activated from the DL on Tuesday after being out because of a strained left groin. Both teams started a 26-year-old lefty, and each lasted only 4 1-3 innings. Nuno pitched in place of Ivan Nova, whos set for Tommy John surgery next week. Trout hit his sixth home run, sending a solo shot into the right-centre field seats. The New Jersey native got a cheer from his parents in the stands. The Yankees loaded the bases in the second, and a balk scored the tying run before Murphy singled. A clean, hard slide by Kendrick helped the Angels make it 3-all in the fourth. He knocked down Yankees second baseman Brian Roberts, whose throw on a potential double-play relay sailed into the dugout and let a run score. Chris Iannetta added a tying double. Yankees centre fielder Jacoby Ellsbury made a diving catch with runners at the corners to end the inning. NOTES: Yankees RHP Masahiro Tanaka (3-0, 2.15) starts against RHP Garrett Richards (2-0, 2.52) on Sunday night. ... Santiagos teams have lost the last nine times hes started. He pitched for the White Sox last year. ... Yankees LF Brett Gardner was hit in the left foot by a pitch from Ernesto Frieri in the eighth. Gardner was examined by a trainer, hobbled to first and stayed in the game. Cal Clutterbuck Jersey . The Oilers jumped into the free agent market early by signing defencemen Keith Aulie (six-foot-six, 228 pounds) and Mark Fayne (6-3, 210 pounds) and left-winger Benoit Pouliot (6-3, 197-pounds). Two days earlier MacTavish traded lightweight forward Sam Gagner to Tampa Bay for 6-3, 203-pound right winger Ted Purcell. Jaroslav Halak Islanders Jersey . At times during a solid but not spectacular season, they looked all three. Still the defending AFC champions persevered, riding their top-ranked defence and key contributions from younger players to a 12-4 record and their eighth playoff appearance since 2000, remarkable consistency in a league where change is the only constant. AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- About a third of the way through the regular season, the Washington Wizards are at .500. Thats progress for a team thats looking more and more like playoff material in the Eastern Conference. "Its big, and we know where we want to be," swingman Martell Webster said. "At this point in the year, its a time weve got to get rolling. When teams start to click, the offensive and defensive schemes start to be all muscle memory." John Wall scored 29 points and the Wizards became the latest team to rally past Detroit in the fourth quarter, beating the Pistons 106-99 on Monday night. Washington scored the first 11 points of the fourth, a run capped by Websters 3-pointer that put the Wizards ahead 89-87. Detroit never led again. Brandon Jennings had 15 points and 14 assists for the Pistons, who have lost five of six. "We had a nice game going for three quarters, but we didnt keep playing," Detroit coach Maurice Cheeks said. "We got stagnant, and they ran pick-and-roll and kept scoring, and we didnt. In the fourth quarter, it comes down to who makes plays." Trevor Ariza scored 15 points for the Wizards, who also beat Detroit 106-82 on Saturday in Washington. The Wizards have won five of six. "Games like this are hard, especially the way we won the one back in D.C.," Washington coach Randy Wittman said. "We knew these guys were going to come out and really come after us. That first half, they did." Bradley Beal scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half for Washington. The Wizards (14-14) are at .500 after 28 games for the first time since finishing the 2007-08 season 43-39, according to STATS. "We came back and fought in the second half," Wall said. "Most of their points in the first half came on second-chance points and they killed us in the paint. We just came in at halftime and saaid we have to rebound. Nick Leddy Islanders Jersey. ." It was another frustrating loss for Detroit, outscored 28-12 in the fourth quarter. The Pistons (14-19) have also blown comfortable fourth-quarter leads at home against Portland and Charlotte during the latter part of December. The Wizards led 101-97 with a minute to go, and Detroits Josh Smith had his driving attempt blocked by Marcin Gortat. Wall connected from near the elbow at the other end to make it a six-point game. Detroit led 63-53 after an up-tempo first half. During one sequence, Greg Monroe dunked over Wall to give the Pistons a 24-19 lead, only to have Ariza answer with a 3-pointer seconds later. Detroit rookie Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored a career-high 17 points, all in the first half. In the second quarter, he missed a dunk on a fast break, but the Pistons came up with the ball and Caldwell-Pope was able to spot up for a 3-pointer to put Detroit ahead 49-44. "I really had a rhythm going in the first half, but I couldnt get it back in the second half. I was trying to loosen up and get back into that same feeling, but it didnt happen," Caldwell-Pope said. "They didnt take anything away from us. We just stopped moving the ball. Weve got to finish games and make plays in the fourth." The Pistons entered the game leading the NBA with 14.4 offensive rebounds per game. They had 14 in the first half against Washington. "You cant allow that to happen," Webster said. "We wanted to come out in the second half and take that away." Detroit had only four offensive rebounds in the second half. NOTES: Detroit G Rodney Stuckey (shoulder) did not play. ... Wall went 14 of 15 on free throws. The Pistons could have used some of that marksmanship -- they went 2 for 9 in the first quarter and 21 of 35 for the game. ... Wall reached the 20-point mark for a seventh straight game.
